In a bizarre incident, a North East Premier League match between Burnopfield Cricket Club and Hetton Lyons was called off after a bull entered the field of play and kept charging at the players. After a lot of failed attempts to get the animal off the field, the match was abandoned.

The bull which weighed about 800kg had escaped from a farm and had travelled for 1.6km to reach the playing field and the animal’s owner had even driven a cow to the field in order to get the bull off the ground but the ruse had failed, according to a report by the BBC. Ultimately, the police arrived before the bull left on its own.

“At first it was quite novel, it was quite funny, but we never thought it was going to impact on our game being abandoned. We couldn’t get rid of it. There was no chance that the game was going to restart before the cut-off time,” Burnopfield club director Martin Oswell said to the BBC.

“The farmer who owned the bull arrived at the ground and tried at first to sort of cajole it and get it into a pen, but it failed. The bull was very frightened, it was spooked. Two farmers tried to stop the bull and it actually hit one of them. He was OK but I mean the beast probably weighed about 800kg. It was a juvenile bull, incredibly fit, athletic, quite frankly, it was quite dangerous,” he added.

Animals and insects interrupting cricket matches are nothing new with bees, snakes, dogs and even African subterranean termites having invaded the fields in the past. In 2017, a village cricket match between Kerridge and Mossley was also interrupted when a cow invaded the pitch and began to charge at the players before eventually leaving.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi began his senior Indian career with a xx-ball 14 runs in an innings which had two sixes in the 2nd T20I vs England at Old Trafford on Saturday. The 15-year-old batter started in his usual aggressive tone, slamming his first six in the first ball of the 2nd over, bowled by Rajasthan Royals teammate Jofra Archer.

His second came at the expense of another debutant Josh Tongue who was taken for a six off the first ball of the third over as well. The teenager finally was bamboozled by Will Jacks in the 5th over after he tried to come down the tracks and attempt a cut. He missed the stroke and was stumped by Jos Buttler for 14.

Sooryavanshi became India’s youngest debutant in international cricket surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who held the record for nearly 37 years. He has also broken the record for being the youngest Indian in international cricket overall, previously held by Shafali Verma who was a few days older than Sooryavanshi is when she made her debut in September 2019. India captain Shreyas Iyer said at the toss that Sooryavanshi has replaced opener Sanju Samson in the lineup.

At 16 years and 205 days, Tendulkar walked into the nation’s collective consciousness with a game that was built on solid defence and artistic offence, defined by Mumbai’s school of ‘Khadoos’ batsmanship.

At 15 years and 99 days, Sooryavanshi seems unfamiliar with the concept of defence, his style tailor-made for the demands of cricket’s slam-bang T20 version. And he fittingly made his India debut in the same format, against England in the second contest of the five-match series. The five-match series remains tied at 0-0 with the first match having been washed out on Wednesday.

While Tendulkar’s maiden international game was a grainy live PTV footage in that 1989 Test against Pakistan, Sooryavanshi has entered the cauldron with 4k cameras tracking his every move since he landed in the UK.

Australian great Matthew Hayden has warned upcoming players from trying to replicate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s batting, wondering if that style is sustainable. Sooryavanshi, still waiting for an India senior team debut, has muscled in to the cricketing consciousness with his all-out attacking approach.

When Hayden was asked whether Shubman Gill’s classical batsmanship and the Bihar lad’s pyrotechnics can co-exist in T20s, he said to PTI, “We are talking about two very unique personalities. Can both (Gill and Sooryavanshi) styles exist? Absolutely. They already do. The challenge for any youngster watching someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is whether that style can be sustained over a long period.”

“Shubman Gill has already shown that it can be done with consistency at the international level, and for me, international cricket remains the premium standard. Just as we see footballers like Lionel Messi represent both club and country successfully, there is room for different approaches in cricket,” Hayden explained.

Hayden, who has been a coach and a respected cricket commentator, said each and every player should search within to find a way to go about their job in their own individual style.

“I strongly believe in helping players find their own inner warrior. Sooryavanshi and Shubman Gill are completely different personalities with different backgrounds and different journeys. That’s the beauty of cricket. It’s a skill-based game, and every player arrives with unique technical strengths and experiences,” Hayden said.

“I grew up admiring Brian Lara, but I wasn’t Brian Lara. I wasn’t West Indian either. I grew up in regional Queensland where sport was central to everyday life. I developed my own game based on my instincts, and that eventually allowed me to become one of the best players in the world.” For Hayden, it is important for every player to find his own identity, making them unique. Sport is full of unique personalities. There will never be another Jonah Lomu (rugby great), another Lionel Messi or another Kelly Slater (surfer). As coaches, our job is to discover those players, nurture their individuality and make sure their development is sustainable,” he added.
