Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal in India’s second T20I against Zimbabwe on Saturday was, paradoxically, both an anomaly and entirely familiar.

An anomaly because of how it unfolded. Sharma – the world’s No. 1-ranked T20I batter not too long ago – meekly pushed a Blessing Muzarabani delivery straight to Ryan Burl at backward point. Stripped of context, it could easily have passed for a routine fielding drill. This manner of departure – on a whimper, and not aplomb – is not in synchronisation with the southpaw’s batting style. But while it seems like an exception in isolation, it was the 10th time in his last 17 T20Is that Sharma had fallen for 10 or fewer, raising fresh questions about how long the ‘longer rope’ the team management has given him is.

Sharma’s form took a nosedive during the initial stages of this year’s T20 World Cup, wherein he was dismissed for a duck on three consecutive occasions. The rut effectively ended with a 55 against this very opposition, but perhaps Zimbabwe seemed intent on testing whether the revival was real. Accordingly, they began the bowling with Sikandar Raza – a right-arm everything spinner, bowling off-spin on this particular occasion, which proved to be Sharma’s Achilles’ heel at the World Cup.

The plan did not reap rewards, as the opener struck two boundaries off that first over. Both were in the extra cover region, but the manner of shots was contrasting – the first was lofted with elegance, the second was slapped with disdain. The promise, however, proved fleeting. An over later, Muzarabani dismissed him with a delivery that was far from the best he bowled all afternoon.

Abhishek Sharma’s numbers in T20Is:

Period Runs Matches Average Strike Rate 50s 100s
Before 2026 T20 World Cup 1297 38 37.05 194.74 8 2
Since 2026 T20 World Cup 330 17 19.41 165 3 0

Sharma’s numbers have significantly steered south since the T20 World Cup. His average – 37.05 before the competition – is now 19.41. Not that he has not altered his approach in a desperate bid to extend his stays in the middle, either. His strike rate, which was nearly 200 till this February, has deteriorated to 165 in the last half-year.

Scrutiny over Sharma’s place in the side, therefore, would hardly be misplaced – not only because of his own prolonged struggles, but also because of the standards India have applied to their other top-order batters. Sanju Samson, the undisputed showstopper from the T20 World Cup with scores of 97*, 89 and 89 in the quarter-final, semi-final and final respectively, was given only three opportunities after the tournament before being axed from the Zimbabwe squad. Ishan Kishan, though retained, was demoted to the number three slot after underwhelming displays against the Netherlands and South Africa.

With every puzzle of the great Indian cricketing jigsaw being transient and movable, there has been an element of permanence and immobility about Abhishek Sharma. For how long, though, is the question.

Ravi Bishnoi did not need a major technical correction. He needed a small adjustment.

After the leg-spinner’s no balls became one of the talking points during India’s T20I against England in Manchester, the focus was on finding a solution quickly. The issue was not his bowling action, India’s bowling coach Sunil Joshi explained, but his alignment during the run up.

“He hasn’t changed anything in his action. He has re-aligned it in the run-up,” Joshi said ahead of the second T20I against Zimbabwe on Friday.

The adjustment has shown initial results. Bishnoi, who did not play the rest of the series after the Manchester T20I, returned to bowling with greater control in Zimbabwe, claiming 1/24 in the first T20I on Thursday.

Joshi revealed that India had worked closely with Bishnoi and also had conversations with the support staff, including regular bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, to address the issue.

“We’ve also communicated with Sairaj. So, we’ve had good conversations with him. And eventually, we’ve seen that he’s not even going close to the return crease also, which is very pleasing for him, honestly, and for us also,” he said.

The Zimbabwe series also provided India an opportunity to look at the depth of their bowling resources after a demanding stretch in Ireland and England. Joshi credited the players for adapting despite the workload.

“I know it was a hectic series in Ireland and England. So, coming back, travel, we’ve got to give credit to the players also,” he said. “And coming back here, it’s important to understand that a win is a must, which has happened. And I’m very pleased with the bowling performances of all the bowlers.”

India have also been exploring additional bowling options among their batting group. Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and other all-rounders have been encouraged to contribute with the ball, giving the team more balance in the shortest format.

Joshi believes all three have the ability to grow into useful bowling options.

“I think all three are good bowlers, all-rounders,” he said. “Although Abhishek Sharma has improved a lot. The coaches always want him to improve every time for the better.”

That approach reflects India’s broader thinking in T20 cricket — developing players who can contribute in multiple departments and give the captain more options.

The same patience applies to Suryansh Shedge, the emerging fast-bowling all-rounder who has impressed with his performances. Joshi was quick to avoid comparisons with established players like Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.

“Look, we shouldn’t compare. Suryansh is making his place in the Indian team,” Joshi said. “Hardik has made his place. Shivam has also made his place. So, he’s a rising talent.”

India are also keeping an eye on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s development. While the teenager’s bowling ability has attracted attention, Joshi believes the immediate focus should remain on his batting.

“The first thing is, let’s focus on his batting. He’s been sensational,” he said.

Joshi added that there would be time to work on Vaibhav’s bowling whenever opportunities arise.

The emergence of young fast bowlers has further strengthened India’s options. Mayank Yadav’s return, Ashok’s performances and Prince’s progress have given India a larger pool to choose from.

“It’s a good thing for the Indian fast bowling pool that we have so many fast bowlers,” Joshi said. “At the right time, at the right situation, at the right moment, we have to utilise them.”

After a bruising tour of England where they were swept 4-0 in a five-match T20 series, Shreyas Iyer’s Indian team starts its tour of Zimbabwe with plenty of intrigue over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenager was given three games to play against England where he managed scores of 15, 13 and 14 before he was dropped in favour of Sanju Samson. With Samson not being named in the side for the Zimbabwe tour, Sooryavanshi will be back in the XI, at the top of the batting.

The Zimbabwe tour could be where he makes a strong case for himself after a tour of England where he became the youngest player to represent India in the second T20I in Manchester, but could only manage scores of 15, 13 and 14.

At the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe, Sooryavanshi finds himself in familiar terrain: it was here he smashed 175 from just 80 balls in the final of the Under-19 World Cup as a 14-year-old against England. Hammering 15 sixes and 15 fours at a strike-rate of 218.75, Sooryavanshi had scored the last 151 runs of that knock off just 56 deliveries.

The rest of the team combination will also be an interesting watch. In the absence of regular pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, a young pace attack will turn out for India with Mayank Yadav earning a comeback to the national setup after a gap of almost two years, while Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur have been handed maiden call-ups.
